Interview with Amitabh Klemm
We caught up with short-film director Amitabh Klemm at last night's party at serpentine Zed451.
What'd you think of the feature tonight?
It was a great film. We thought the festival did a good job of putting our two movies together.
Indeed. And it's pleasant to watch Winona Ryder on the screen...
I love her, she could be reading the phone book and I'd be there with, like, stars in my eyes.
Where did the idea for your film come from?
Well, I met with my friend Zack (co-writer Zack Kaplan) for coffee and I ambushed him and said: i want you to write me a thesis film! We brainstormed, we had this idea of the difference between wanting and having. We focused a lot on location...
I thought you did a great job of making the city almost another character in the film. Why Chicago?
I knew I wanted to shoot here. I've travelled quite a bit but it's my favorite city. Chicago's a city of great texture, glamor and grit, industrial and cosmopolitan. And I felt like exploring the idea of a stalker in a city with those dichotomies would work best.
I think it did. As a Chicago native I'm dying to know: Wicker Park or Lakeview?
(thinks for 20 seconds): Ummmmm, Wicker Park.
Cubs or Sox?
(thinks for 0.001 seconds): Cubs
